लोहड़ी की कहानी जुड़ी है सुंदरी और मुंदरी नाम की दो बहनों तथा पंजाब के वीर योद्धा दुल्ला भट्टी से। कहा जाता है कि मुगल शासक अकबर के समय एक गरीब ब्राह्मण की दो बेटियां—सुंदरी और मुंदरी—काफी सुंदर थीं। शासक की ओर से उनके साथ जबरन विवाह की कोशिश की गई, जबकि उनकी सगाई पहले से हो चुकी थी। डर के कारण उनके होने वाले ससुराल वाले भी विवाह के लिए आगे नहीं आ रहे थे।

ऐसे कठिन समय में दुल्ला भट्टी ने मानवता और साहस की मिसाल पेश की। उन्होंने जंगल में अलाव जलाकर दोनों बहनों का विवाह करवाया और स्वयं कन्यादान किया। दुल्ला भट्टी ने उन्हें शगुन के रूप में शक्कर, गुड़, चावल और पॉपकॉर्न दिए तथा सुखी जीवन की कामना की।

इसी घटना की स्मृति में लोहड़ी के अवसर पर “सुंदर मुंदरिए” गीत गाया जाता है। आज भी बच्चे अलाव के चारों ओर इकट्ठा होकर यह गीत गाते हैं और बदले में उन्हें पैसे या उपहार दिए जाते हैं। यह परंपरा दुल्ला भट्टी की बहादुरी, न्याय और मानवता को याद करने का प्रतीक बन चुकी है।

लोहड़ी न केवल फसल और मौसम परिवर्तन का पर्व है, बल्कि यह सामाजिक मूल्यों और लोककथाओं को अगली पीढ़ी तक पहुंचाने का भी माध्यम है।

Lohri Festival: The Inspiring Story of Dulla Bhatti and the Tradition of “Sundar Mundriye”

As the sacred festival of Lohri approaches, an atmosphere of joy and celebration fills North India, especially Punjab. With bonfires, folk songs, and traditional rituals, Lohri is not just a celebration but also an opportunity to reconnect with our roots and cultural heritage. However, many people are unaware of the true story behind Lohri and why the folk song “Sundar Mundriye” is sung.

The story of Lohri is linked to two sisters, Sundari and Mundari, and the brave Punjabi hero Dulla Bhatti. It is believed that during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar, a poor Brahmin had two beautiful daughters—Sundari and Mundari. The Mughal ruler attempted to force them into marriage, even though they were already engaged. Out of fear, their future in-laws were unwilling to proceed with the wedding.

In this difficult situation, Dulla Bhatti emerged as a symbol of courage and humanity. He arranged their marriage by lighting a bonfire in the forest and performed the ritual of kanyadaan himself. As a blessing, he gifted the sisters sugar, jaggery, rice, and popcorn, and wished them a happy and prosperous life.

Since then, the folk song “Sundar Mundriye” has been sung on the day of Lohri in memory of Dulla Bhatti, celebrating his bravery and compassion. Even today, children gather around the bonfire, sing this song, and are given money or gifts in return. This tradition continues to keep his legacy alive.
