ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਹੁਣ ਤਿੰਨ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੇਂਦਰ — ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ (ਵਾਲਡ ਸਿਟੀ), ਆਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਤਲਵੰਡੀ ਸਾਬੋ — ਨੂੰ “ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ” ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਐਲਾਨ ਦਾ ਮਕਸਦ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਾਉਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ‘ਚ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਬੰਧ ਵੀ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਸੂਚਨਾ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ, ਤਿੰਨੋ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਸ, ਸ਼ਰਾਬ, ਤਮਾਕੂ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਨਸ਼ੇਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਿਕਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਪਭੋਗਤਾ ‘ਤੇ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਸਥਾਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀਪੂਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੇ।
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਿਕ ਕਦਮ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲ ‘350ਵੇਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਦਿਵਸ’ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮਿਕ ਕੇਂਦਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਸਾਉਣਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਿਫ਼ਾਜ਼ਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹਨਾਂ “ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ” ਵਿੱਚ ਗੋਲਡਨ ਟੈਂਪਲ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ), ਤਖਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕੈਸ਼ਗੜ੍ਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ (ਆਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ) ਅਤੇ ਤਖਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਮਦਮਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ (ਤਲਵੰਡੀ ਸਾਬੋ) ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮਿਕ ਪਰੰਪਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਹਿਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਦਰਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਿਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਪਾਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਥੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੇਵਕ, ਯਾਤਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਤ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਧਰਮਿਕ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ।
ਸੂਚਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸੈਰ‑ਸਪਾਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ‘ਚ ਇਸ ਸਥਾਨ ਦੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਬਣੇਗਾ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਮੂਲਤਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਆਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ‘ਤੇ ਵੀ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
The Punjab government has officially announced a historic decision to designate three of the state’s most revered Sikh religious centres — Amritsar (Walled City), Anandpur Sahib, and Talwandi Sabo — as “Holy Cities.” The move aims to preserve and honor the sanctity, heritage, and spiritual significance of these locations, which hold deep cultural and religious importance for the Sikh community and devotees.
As part of the declaration, the state has introduced a series of prohibitions and restrictions within the notified limits of the three cities. Under the new rules, the sale and consumption of meat, alcohol, tobacco, and other intoxicating substances are prohibited. This step is designed to protect the sacred character of these cities and ensure that they remain peaceful, spiritually focused spaces for worship, pilgrimage, and cultural heritage.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann described the decision as a historic move and an important acknowledgment of the deep historical and religious roots of these places. He highlighted that the move came alongside statewide commemorations of Sikh heritage events, emphasizing the role these sites play not only within Punjab but across the global Sikh diaspora. By granting “Holy City” status, the government intends to provide both reverence and protection to these revered centers.
The three cities encompass significant Sikh institutions: the Golden Temple and Akal Takht in Amritsar, Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, and Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo. Each is deeply rooted in Sikh history and teachings, serving as hubs of spiritual activity and community life. The holy city status reinforces the need to uphold traditions and spiritual norms aligned with their sacred heritage.
Officials noted that the prohibitions are designed not to hinder daily life but to maintain the religious sanctity and cultural integrity of these historic centres. The restrictions apply within the officially notified “Holy City” boundaries, where devotees and visitors gather for prayer, festivals, and religious tourism.
The government has also signaled intentions to support infrastructure development, cleanliness, and enhanced religious tourism in these cities. Local leaders and communities have praised the move, saying it upholds traditions while fostering respect for spiritual values. As these policies come into effect, they reflect a broader effort to preserve Punjab’s religious heritage and promote harmonious cultural identity.
