India has been selected to take over the chairpersonship of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KP) starting January 1, 2026, positioning it at the forefront of global efforts to curb the trade in conflict diamonds. This appointment underscores India’s growing role in shaping ethical standards in the international diamond trade at a time when the sector is facing significant shifts and heightened scrutiny over human rights and sustainability.
The Kimberley Process is a tripartite initiative involving governments, the global diamond industry, and civil society organizations, tasked with preventing rough diamonds used by rebel groups or their allies to finance conflicts that undermine legitimate governments. Under the KP framework, participants work together to ensure that diamonds entering the legitimate market are free from association with armed violence or exploitation. The initiative currently includes about 60 participants, covering over 99% of the global rough diamond trade.
India’s leadership of the Kimberley Process is significant for several reasons. India is a major hub for diamond cutting and polishing, handling the vast majority of the world’s rough diamonds before they reach global jewelry markets. With its deep experience in the diamond supply chain, India’s chairpersonship reflects confidence in its ability to promote transparency, compliance, and responsible sourcing practices throughout the global industry.

Sanctions on certain diamond sources have altered trade routes, creating opportunities and challenges for producers and refiners worldwide. In this context, India’s role as Chair signals its strategic importance in maintaining stability and integrity in the diamond supply chain, while also promoting responsible practices that benefit multiple stakeholders in the global market.
Leaders in India’s government and diamond trade bodies have welcomed the appointment, viewing it as global recognition of the country’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in international commerce.
